Active Creative was a community co-design project, working with community groups, in Banff and Macduff to merge physical and creative activity to promote mental health and wellbeing. The project was part of the North East Culture Collective Network, partnering with with Live Life Aberdeenshire and the Vinery, Aberdeen Foyer.

Between summer 2023 and spring 2024, I led creative nature walks, workshops, events with local residents and community groups. I facilitated working group meetings, whereby individuals from third sector, public health services including NHS Grampian, recovery groups, mental health charities and residents could discuss ideas for the projects.

I began leading synchronised walks, for residents wishing to take part from home, indoors or outdoors from a distance. Photos, recordings and videos were shared via a walking WhatsApp group , weaving creative conversation around place. Each walk was guided by a seasonal nature theme, for participants to respond to while walking or from home base.

Through co- design, the project gently formed over time and culminated in the Wander Buddy Service, offering volunteer-led, gentle 1:1 walking companionship with creative, nature activities. Sustainable benches and planters were installed along an accessible walking route as well as an accompanying pocket size map, designed by myself and participants.Josie Haslan, the Wander Buddy Coordinator is currently still in position and supporting the growth of the project with the Vinery.
